This What Works Clearinghouse guidebook, entitled Teaching Academic Content and Literacy to English Learners in Elementary and Middle School, offers practical information about how to support English Language Learners with the Common Core. In addition to four overarching recommendations, the guide offers examples and tips for implementing the recommendations in classrooms. This guidebook focuses on improving academic vocabulary, writing, and content-area learning of English learners at both elementary and middle grades.
The guidebook’s four recommendations are:
Teach a set of academic vocabulary words intensively across several days using a variety of instructional activities
Integrate oral and written English language instruction into content-area teaching
Provide regular and structured opportunities to develop written language skills
Provide small-group instructional intervention to students struggling in literacy and English language development.
