Together with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Digital Learning, the NCC is developing a year long, lightly facilitated online professional development course centered around building online courses.

Before the course begins we will be providing interested participants with a self-assessment to identify if this is the right PD opportunity for them.

The course is made up of the 5 sections of the ADDIE Model: analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate. All throughout the course participants are encouraged to collaborate with each other through discussion forums.

In the Analyze section participants are presented resources meant to orient them to online teaching, learning, and some of the unique considerations of online courses. There is little course development done in this section. Our aim is to have participants read voraciously about online learning and internalize what they have read before moving on to the planning of the course.

Participants will then go into the Design stage where they will map out what their lessons and activities will look like. Resources in this section help with finding free online tools and ways to make online courses more accessible and engaging. After this section, participants will have a complete plan for all of their online course elements.

Now that participants have their plans in hand, it is time to upload them to a learning management system in the Develop section. Once courses are finalized, participants will create a presentation explaining their course and showing it to others in the course.

In the Implement and Evaluate sections participants will use the knowledge they have gained about good online course building to evaluate other online courses. We have several case study courses, all with some good and less exemplary elements, that will hone participants online course design and evaluation skills.

If you represent another SEA or LEA in the Northeast and would like more information about this opportunity please contact Anushka Paul ( If you are a district in Massachusetts and would like to know more about how your school or district can be involved, please reach out to Chris Hieber at ( This course is scheduled to start on January 2, 2015.
