Congratulations to the State of Maine! In early October, the Maine Department of Education took advantage of an opportunity granted through the Council of Chief State School Officers to focus on preschool to 3rd grade education. Maine Department of Education staff from early learning and k-12 literacy partnered to develop a day-long institute called,“From Preschool to Kindergarten: Connecting Language and Literacy Standards”. Schools were asked to bring teams including pre-k teachers, kindergarten teachers, literacy specialists, principals, and early learning partners to learn about and explore issues and trends in early language and literacy education and introduce the draft of Maine’s emerging early language and literacy learning standards. Teams were welcomed by Maine’s Department of Education Commissioner, James E. Rier, Jr. and learned from researcher, Dr. Dorothy S. Strickland.
NCC was pleased to be a part of the planning for this special event. NCC was on hand to help facilitate and looks forward to working with the Department on next steps to keep the momentum going.
